Arsenal Season Review: Missing a Center Back?
So the season’s been over for a while and I’ve thought of writing this for a while but have been busy talking about all the transfer activity that hasn’t actually happened. So I was just thinking about our problems at Center Back in the second half of the year. At the beginning of the transfer window we almost bought a new Center Back and at the Same time we actually sold one of our Center Backs who had previously been in contention for a spot in the team at the beginning of the year…
Recognize that guy? He was our reserve team captain Havard Nordtveit. At the beginning of the year it was thought he would get a run in in the first team after a successful loan spell at Hannover in the Bundesliga. Nordtveit basically did what Bartley has done in playing Center Back and Defensive Midfielder and did well. My best friend is from Germany and has loved Borussia Dortmund all his life, but he also enjoys keeping track of all the teams in the Bundesliga and talked of how much he couldn’t wait to see Nordtveit back at Arsenal. The disappointment that we sold him in the same transfer window we needed to buy a center back was evident. Not only that, but for 800,000 pounds to Monchengladbach.
Now, maybe he wouldn’t have saved our season, but honestly we could have seen what he’s made of for one thing, and he couldn’t possibly be any worse than Squillaci. This would have been a great opportunity to give him that experience and who knows, he could have been a contender to play next to Vermaelen next year so we could save the money in buying a new one.
In my opinion, it was very poor decision making, in the second half of the season he’s started 16 games for Borussia Monchengladbach and now he’ll be playing in the second Bundesliga next year. By the way, Monchengladbach is a poor team and they have 2 or 3 good players and Nordtveit is one of them. My only point is that we let a player who had some experience leave when all we had for cover was Ignasi Miquel who has basically no experience.
